The concession of the marine terminal of containers of the Port of Progreso, located in the Mexican peninsula of the Yucatan, formalized the signature of the contract on December 16 2004, initiating its operations the 1th of July 2005. The Terminal Society of Containers of Yucatan (TCY), is property of the Spanish group “TCB”. TCB Groups counts with seven terminals in Spain, one in Brazil and another one in Cuba.
The term of concession is 20 years, prorogueable for up to 19 more years. The anticipated capacity throughout all the period of concession is 250,000 TEU´s, which will allow to increase the load movement up to 400%.
The awardee society commits itself to invest 20 million dollars (15 million euros) in the modernization of infrastructures and equipment in machinery.
The current Terminal of Containers of Yucatan has a surface of 11.5 hectares, and the possibility of extension of up to 2.4 hectares, (2.38Ha) counts on 470 meters (480mts) of wharf, wharf 5 and 6 of 210 and 270 meters respectively, up to 11,30 meters of openwork, 2 panamax cranes, 1 mobile crane, 4 reach stackers, and 1 Top loader.
The influence zone of this port is 10 million inhabitants, 10% of the total population of Mexico. Great part of the region industry is based on textile and fabric manufacturing that represent an annual volume of 60,000 TEU´s in marine traffic.
